Overview

Our St. Paul Park refinery (SPPR) is located along the Mississippi River southeast of St. Paul Park, Minnesota, and was originally built in 1939. It has a crude oil refining capacity of 105,000 barrels per calendar day (bpcd).

The St. Paul Park refinery processes sweet and heavy sour crude and manufactures gasoline, distillates, asphalt, propane, heavy fuel oil and natural gas liquids and petrochemicals. Products are delivered from the refinery by truck, rail and barge.

Health Safety and Environment

At MPC, the health and safety of our employees and contractors is of paramount concern. We take steps to ensure an accident-free, incident-free workplace. Due to this commitment, we've implemented safety measures and been recognized as a leader in safety.

At the same time, we are committed to minimizing our impact on the environment. As such, we participate in multiple programs, support several organizations and implement various initiatives that aim to protect our environment and the local communities in which we operate.

Below is a list of recent accolades and accomplishments that we've earned at our St. Paul Park refinery.

  • 2025 ENERGY STAR® certification – U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, seventh consecutive year: Signifies energy efficiency performance in the top 25% of similar facilities nationwide.
  • 2021 Distinguished Safety Award – American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers: The association’s highest safety honor, which goes to facilities that demonstrate exemplary safety performance, program innovation and safety leadership.

Community

At Marathon Petroleum, we know that community is important. It's why we do what we do every day. So, aside from fueling the St. Paul Park area, we also make it a priority to be actively involved in efforts that have a positive impact on the community. Listed below are some of the ways we do just that.

  • Notable grants in 2024:
    • Belwin Conservancy – Inspiring Through Nature Campaign: $100,000 to support the new 5,000-square-foot Wetlands Center, an educational facility designed to remove barriers to outdoor exploration for people of all abilities.
    • Youth Service Bureau: $40,000 to support school-based chemical health services by increasing the number of chemical health specialists available to address student substance abuse.
    • Dakota County Technical College Foundation: $20,000 to assist over 400 students annually through scholarships and other financial aid.
  • 2023 City of Newport Business of the Year – Newport, Minnesota: Recognized the refinery for investing in its employees and for its overall commitment to the community.
